TAPIO RQP – ROLL QUALITY PROFILER
TAPIO Roll Quality Profiler is designed for fast and accurate measurement of paper roll and machine roll hardness profile. Hand-held measurement device includes hardness measuring unit and distance encorder. Paper reels with non-uniform hardness profile may cause problems when printed or converted. RQP is the fastest and the most accurate system to detect reels that need to be excluded in printing or converting processes.

RQP hardness profiles are measured at a speed of approximately 5 sec./m. Unit runs automatically 10 measurements per second. Data is collected and processed real-time in tablet PC and profiles can easily be down-loaded to mill system. Excellent repeatability of the measurement makes hardness profiles a usefull part of quality control system of paper mill, converting plant or printing house.

RQP combined with Tapio Process Data Analysis software allow roll hardness comparisons to other process or lab measurement data. Roll hardness profile correlations to on-machine caliper, basis weight and moisture profiles are some of the many possibilities this powerful tool provides. >> open picture

OPACITY MEASUREMENT FOR TAPIO ANALYZERS NOW AVAILABLE:
TAPIO Technologies Oy is the manufacturer of the TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) and TAPIO TS Profiler. Opacity measurement is the latest addition to the selection of measurements for TAPIO Analyzers.

Opacity measurement requires transmission sensor and either remission sensor or TPS Tapio Printability sensor. Tapio´s high resolution, continuous line measurement approach allows small scale opacity variation measurements. Opacity profiles and flock distribution, both CD and MD, can now be measured first time with high resolution and accuracy. Tapio analysis diagnostics can locate the specific machine elements that are causing opacity variations.

Like all Tapio measurements, opacity measurement is very fast. One 10 meter opacity profile is measured in 30 seconds and include up to 10.000 measurement points per meter. Tapio opacity measurement gives immediate information about opacity correlation to other properties that are measured at the same time. Below is an example of opacity CD profile. >> opacity graph

PRESS RELEASE MARCH 10th, 2002

ABB FIBER ORIENTATION TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE ON TAPIO ANALYZERS: TAPIO Technologies Oy and ABB have completed development to integrate ABB Fiber Orientation Measurement into Tapio Analyzers. The sensor hardware is the same proven ABB technology uses in on-line paper mill applications.

The ABB Fiber Orientation Sensor provides dual-sided, true fiber orientation information for both fiber ratio and fiber angle. It directly measures the fibers using ABB’s patented Laser Arc Polarization(tm) measurement principle.

Four measurement profiles are provided, including top angle, bottom angle, top ratio and bottom ratio. This allows easy identification of fiber orientation differences between the two sides of the paper. Fiber ratio is accurate within +/- 0.05 and fiber angle within +/- 0.5 °.

>> open cross direction profile

Above link is an example of FO angle profile (top) and FO ratio profile (bottom).

Runnability challenges, such as twist and curl issues, can be overcome through improved fiber orientation. Visibility into root cause of these problems allows the ABB Fiber Orientation measurement to provide fast return on investment.

ABB (http://www.abb.com) is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB has 155,000 employees in more than 100 countries.

PRESS RELEASE JANUARY 2nd, 2002

MOISTURE SENSOR NOW AVAILABLE FOR TAPIO ANALYZERS:

TAPIO Technologies Oy is the manufacturer of the TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) and TAPIO TS Profiler. Moisture Sensor is the latest addition to the selection of sensors for TAPIO Analyzers. Total number of different Tapio sensors is now 12.

Moisture Sensor is a non-contacting instrument detecting moisture content by reflecting near infra-red light through fibre optics. Increased light energy, improved fibre optics and a superior filtering system allow measurements with higher resolution and increased accuracy. Moisture sensor with Tapio analyzer gives immediate information about the moisture profiles, especially MD, and correlation to other paper properties that are measured at the same time.

Moisture profile measurement is known to be very problematic feature to measure because of evaporation. Studies show, however, that when measuring MD rolls using Tapio analyzers, the original moisture MD variation can be found for many paper grades after dried part of the roll has past the analysis sequence. Below is an example of MD moisture measurement showing how original moisture variation can be found after 40 meters of analysis.

PRESS RELEASE JULY 11th, 2001

POROSITY SENSOR NOW AVAILABLE FOR TAPIO ANALYZERS: TAPIO® Technologies Oy is the manufacturer of the TAPIO® Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) and TAPIO® TS Profiler. TAPIO® Technologies has added a new TAPIO® Porosity Sensor to the selection of sensors for TAPIO® Analyzers.

TAPIO® Porosity Sensor together with a TAPIO® analyzer gives immediate information about the porosity profiles, both CD and MD, and correlation to other paper properties that are measured at the same time. Therefore, true and continuous porosity profile is now possible to measure.

Porosity has traditionally been very important feature of paper grades such as cigarette, sack craft and filter paper. With the increasing production speeds porosity is also gaining importance among copier and printing paper makers and SC paper makers in general.

On-line porosity sensors currently available miss short term porosity variations because of long measurement times and often fast processes. They are also non-traversing systems and not measuring according to any laboratory standard.. TAPIO® Porosity Sensor used in TAPIO® analyzer platform now allows stable, easy and fast way to measure continuous porosity profiles and measurement can be done according to most laboratory standards such as Bendtsen, Gurley, Bekk, ISO, DIN etc. CD, MD or single sheets can be measured.

TAPIO® Porosity Sensor is software alligned to measure same point with other TAPIO® sensors. This opens new possibilities for evaluation of porosity correlation to various other paper properties. Example below on the left show how porosity correlates well with caliper in case of SC paper and same time correlation is poor to basis weight. Correlations are jus the opposite in example on the right (LWC paper).

PRESS RELEASE 3.1.2001

TAPIO ANALYZER; NEW FEATURES INCLUDE WIREMARKING AND SHRINKAGE PROFILE: TAPIO Technologies Oy the manufacturer of the TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) and TAPIO TS Profiler has added a new feature to TAPIO Analyzers- Shrinkage Profile Measurement.

The TS Profiler is a new evolution model of widely used de facto standard optimization tool - the TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA). Both analyzers measure multiple signals in just one measurement. Based on high-resolution data mill gets full analysis of profiles, profile edges, formation (beta & optical) and other. Typical everyday verification is testing on-line scanner profiles against TAPIO profiles. The TS Profiler can be equipped with maximum of four sensors and the TAPIO PMA can house all sensor types available. TAPIO sensor types are ash, basis weight, caliper, surface fiber orientation, gloss, printability, remission and transmission.

WIREMARKING AND SHRINKAGE PROFILE FOR BETTER MAPPING OF ON-LINE SCANNERS

New application is the wire marking and shrinkage profile measurement.

With TAPIO papermaker has now complete optimization tool to maintain the on-line scanning systems. Papermaker will achieve:

   * Better mapping by knowing the true profile shrinkage
   * Fast verification of the on-line profiles by Tapio high resolution
measurement. It is also possible to use "databox"-type of result       presentation similar to the on-line system, but now using Tapio       high resolution data.
   * Measures the true edges of the sheet of paper.
   * CD and MD variability problems can be solved with the TAPIO's
high resolution measurements and analysis capabilities.

Shrinkage measurement is done with extra high resolution TPS- sensor. This sensor can measure paper surface every 17 um. This resolution is easily high enough to detect the wire marking and other very small scale variation on the paper surface.

When the wire marking is detected on the CD-strip the data can be further manipulated with TAPIO Analyzers analysis software in order to detect the wavelength changes of the wiremarking. This wavelength change is introduced by the shrinkage of the profile (the more shrinkage the shorter the detected wavelength). Due to the continuous high resolution measurement the degree of shrinkage can be detected at any given point of the profile and thus the paper maker does not have to rely on pointwise sample measurements.

Shrinkage % is considered as the wavelength difference btw the edge and average middle position values divided by the average wavelength of the wire marking. See the picture.

PRESS RELEASE 2.2.2000

New high-resolution paper profiler from TAPIO Technologies: TAPIO Technologies Oy has developed an answer for every paper mill's quality control and troubleshooting needs. The new analyzer is called TAPIO TS Profiler. The TS Profiler is a new evolution model of widely used de facto standard optimization tool - the TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA). Multiple results can be gathered with just one measurement. Based on high-resolution data mill gets full analysis of profiles, profile edges, formation (beta & optical) and other. Typical everyday verification is on-line scanners testing against TAPIO profiles. The TS Profiler can be equipped with maximum four sensors. Those can be any TAPIO sensors such as ash, basis weight, caliper, surface fiber orientation, gloss, printability, remission or transmission.

The TAPIO TS Profiler is easy and handy to use with bar code reader and unwind unit. The unwinding unit makes it possible to measure multiple strips in one run. Also possible is to run short machine direction samples up to 1000 meters. WinTAPIO software is divided into two layers, handy operator level and advanced analyzer layer. This ensures that routine analyzes can be made easily and fast, but also the advanced problems can be solved.

For long machine direction sample analysis we recommended TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) which gives more flexibility with the sample size. For printability studies we also recommended TAPIO Laboratory Printing Machine for sample printing.

TS Profiler pictures are available at downloads page.

PRESS RELEASE 5.5.1999

New laboratory scale rotogravure printing machine by TAPIO Technologies Oy: Correlation between paper and print quality is one of the main interest areas of papermaking. So far it has been hard to get long samples printed and tested in laboratory scale. TAPIO Technologies Oy has introduced a new TAPIO Laboratory Printing Machine (LPM) capable to print 1500 meters long rotogravure samples. These sample rolls can be analyzed before and after printing with TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) using TAPIO Printability Sensor (TPS) and other high resolution sensors like e.g. basis weight, ash, caliper and gloss.

TAPIO Laboratory Printing Machine (LPM) is designed to replace most of the time consuming and expensive commercial print trials. TAPIO Laboratory Printing Machine (LPM) prints from roll to roll at the speed of 3 m/s. The width of the print cylinder is 22 cm, one rotation is 90 cm long and the produced print image is continuos. The LPM has an optional top loading ESA (Electrostatic Assist) system and adjustable nip pressure. The load and angle of oscillating doctor blade can be adjusted. The small size of the printing machine (157x186x130cm) makes it easy to install in a normal size laboratory.

TAPIO Paper Machine Analyzer (PMA) is a well known standard tool in Paper Machine optimization. With the PMA's high resolution sensors the problem components of a paper machine both in cross and machine direction of the paper can be localized. Also product quality of paper can be optimized including the parameters affecting the print quality.

TAPIO Printability Sensor (TPS) scans 6000lines/s with its CCD camera. One line consists of 256 pixels corresponding to about 1500 dpi. The TPS is used for studying e.g. missing dots, print density, print mottle etc. The TPS sensor alone has a maximum of eight output channels.
