Calenders By idetifying a faulty calender roll a user was able to increase the moisture level of product by 1%. This improvement alone meant $200,000 USD per year savings of fiber on one machine only.

5.1.Machine direction Unbalanced calender rolls, calender barring, and the roll or rolls causing the faults are routinely detected by TAPIO. 5.2.Cross direction If the roll crowns are not correct or blackening is occurring TAPIO can detect that and identify reasons causing the problem. Problems caused by CD-caliper controls are also very typical. Other problem sources can be roll alignment problems, moisturizing unit's etc. 5.3.Actions Replace faulty rolls - fine-tune the controls. 5.4.Benefits Better runnability, better printability, possibly higher moisture content of the paper. More invoicing and lower cost product. NOTE!All the potential problems mentioned earlier can cause runnability problems at the later stages in process- not only at customer site but also already within the mill – shaking winders or difficulties in super calendering being typical examples.SUPER CALENDAR By reducing closs variability through TAPIO PMA analysis, mill was able to increase the average gloss levely by 1%. This was achieved by decreasing the overall gloss variation. Wire speed- jet speed ratio can be optimized. 6.2.Benefits Usually the better the formation the better the printability and runnability. Also blackening is heavily dependable on formation – among other things. Since TAPIO measures basis weight and ash exactly at the same location the TAPIO ash profiles are very accurate. Even small streaks can be detected and the causes identified. Better runnability, better printability and material savings are made possible by more even coating.
